Extrication of Homeless is Universal

June 25, 2021

As Irina and I approached the church it seemed to me that on the outer edge of the stairs you make your way to the ornately gigantic carved wood entrance doors, homeless individuals were planted in the open air gardens like flowers that once dressed this architectural behemoth before the winter season, beautifully ornate flowers dormant with hope of sprouting a blaze of colors in the springtime.  As we passed silhouettes of forgone beauty they now wear their age not with hope in their eyes but sadness and loss.  Pigeons nested on the ground collecting warmth from some of the surrounding wind breaking walls, huddled together searching for comfort from a freezing day.

The Holy Spirit Cathedral, in the center if the capital city of Minsk, Belarus is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. It is the central cathedral of the Belarusian Orthodox Church

We enter the cathedral thrust upon us is a matrimony ceremony in the midst of being performed. We sit down on a bench in back of the cathedral, glance at each other, kiss smile and in admiration all our hearts join together in one millisecond. I am overrun with questions looking around this alluring historic site, wondering about the Orthodox Ceremony being executed in front of me, in Russian of course but more than that it’s the traditions, his and her crowns being worn, prayers being said, walking around what I would assume was a bible numerous times as the choir sang from a loft behind elaborate silk curtains to make you believe that those angelic voices were coming down from heaven itself.

fore we left Irina brought me over to an area where what I called rings were under glass and very well preserved, she later shared with me that within those gold rings (pyx) are remnants of Mary Magdalene’s garments and articles. As all churches are this is a very consecrated place, it is quite, cold because everything is marble, but on a very sad note all three of the homeless came into the church for comfort, whether it be from the raging cold, a few prayers to ask for some needed help or as in one case the gentleman with crutches went over to a Holy Water Fountain to grab some water, which I found strange but they drink the Holy Water in any case they were allowed a limited time in the church before being escorted out by a security guard.  My heart was broken, as we left since I did not have socks to give them I gave them all 1 dollar.  If you look back at the picture with the individuals with crutches they both blessed me and thanked me over and over again.

Again I thank all of you for taking the time either to read this blog or just taking a few minutes just to come to my page. I am very blessed to have so many people visit and make comments, Love to one and all.
